History of Greek Wine

The origin of winemaking in Greece goes up to 6500 years back, while there are evidences suggesting that the first grape crushing process in the world and the second oldest known wine were derivatives of Greek winemaking.

More specifically, historians attribute the oldest organized wine press in the world to Minoan civilization, which thrived in Crete island and neighboring Mediterranean areas (e.g. Santorini) back to 2500 BC. However, signs of burned seeds and compressed grape peels found in North Greece (Filippous area in East Macedonia) dated by radiometry back to 4500 BC, implying the existence of some kind of primitive winemaking from as early as Neolithic period.

The history of Greek wine is inextricably linked to culture, economy, religion, society and daily life, but also to the places where viticulture, production and consumption of wine developed.

Greek winemaking and viticulture holds probably the longest history in the world among the wine producing countries, while Greece is one of the top wine regions in Europe.

Today, Greek wines are renowned in all over the world due to the passion and expertise of local winemakers, but also due to the promptly increasing popularity and development of the science of Oenology.
